Daddy's Girl

by Gary Ray Stapp

Directed by: Scott Harvey

Performances: February 15, 16, 22, 23, 24(m), 28, March 1, 2

A widower for twenty-five years, Benard Muloovy, proprietor of Maudie’s Diner, is served a full plate of comic chaos when his deceased wife, a talking portrait on the diner wall, enlists the services of an angel to help her reunite Benard with their long, lost daughter, Elizabeth. But true to his mischievous nature, Michael, the angel, brings into Benard’s life, not one, but two Elizabeths, each with the same birthday and adopted from the same orphanage. Benard’s task is to decide which young woman is his real daughter, but there’s one problem: He doesn’t like either of them. E.L. is a snobbish restaurant critic with her eye on Benard’s secret wealth, while Lizzy suffers from a split personality disorder. However, there is no shortage of people eager to contribute to his dilemma: a forgetful waitress, a PHD student with a communication disability, a yin-yang geriatric duo, and a motorcycle mama anxious to become the next Mrs. Muloovy. But Darlynn, a woman who has been trying to get Benard to the altar for a quarter of a century, has her own bizarre strategy to win his heart. In a contest of laughter and tears, lines are drawn, sides are taken, and rules are broken, as one young lady reveals a secret and ultimately claims her paternity, but not without a twist, or two.

Directed by: Rebecca Douglas & Timothy John Kelley II

This new dramatization of C.S. Lewis’ classic, set in the land of Narnia, faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting, never-to-be-forgotten Narnia. The intense action features chases, duels and escapes as the witch is determined to keep Narnia in her possession and to end the reign of Aslan. All the memorable episodes from the story are represented in this exciting dramatization. The supporting characters are also here: the unicorn, the centaur and other forest animals, along with Father Christmas, Mr. and Mrs. Beaver and Tumnus the Faun. This story of love, faith, courage and giving, with its triumph of good over evil, is a true celebration of life.

Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy written as an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea”. Set in a fictional medieval kingdom ruled by the devious Queen Aggravain and the mute King Sexitmus the Silent, who suffers from a curse that can only be reversed “when the mouse devours the hawk.” The populace of the castle complains about an unjust law levied by Queen Aggravain: “Throughout the land no one may wed, till Dauntless (the prince) shares his wedding bed.” However, every petitioning princess is sent away after failing unfair tests devised by the Queen. When Sir Harry discovers that his girlfriend, Lady Larken, is pregnant, he sets out to find a princess. He returns with Princess Winnifred of the swamp, who Dauntless falls for immediately. The Queen and her Wizard set up a test for sensitivity by placing a pea under twenty mattresses. But was it the pea that kept the princess up all night?

Karlissa Cornwell previously directed Pride and Prejudice and Little Women at ACT, and has acted in The Odd Couple, A Little Piece of Heaven, Pippin and Crimes of the Heart. She taught English and drama for 18 years, and is now an education professor at Western Oregon University.

Performances: August 24, 25, 26(m), 30, 31, September 1

Camp Cost: $150 (Sibling discounts available; Limited scholarships available)

For many people, a Shakespearean play is difficult to understand and appreciate. And yet, Shakespeare continues to be studied in schools and universities. It has been adapted in many ways for film and theater and remains one of the most popular of theatrical experiences. This year, the ACT Youth Program is presenting a festival of three Shakespearean plays: Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. These plays use modern language and are significantly shortened yet keep the Elizabethan flair and the complexity of the Bard’s plots. This summer program will be a valuable educational experience in the classics and theater.

While this year’s production is not a musical, there will be musical elements and actors should prepare 20-30 seconds of a song for auditions. The ACT Youth Program’s goal is to prepare young people for the theater. In that vein, Student Directing Teams will be formed early spring to work with the director developing the plays ahead of camp. Members of the directing teams will still be able to participate in the other plays as actors or in the back stage crew. The three plays will allow all participants to act and be a part of the back stage crew. For those students (ages 12 – 18) interested in being a part of the Student Directing Teams, please contact LaVelle Grandy-Brown: lavellegb@msn.com; 503-930-7511.

Twelfth Night
This is a comedy about love, in which three couples are brought together. It begins with Orsino, expressing his deep love for the Countess Olivia. Meanwhile, the shipwrecked Viola disguises herself as a man, takes on the name Cesario, and enters the Duke’s service. The Duke asks Cesario to woo Olivia for him. Ironically, Cesario falls in love with the Duke, and Olivia falls in love with Cesario. The play has many of the elements including mistaken identity, separated twins, and gender- crossing disguise. The plots revolve around overcoming obstacles and finding “true” love.

Romeo and Juliet
This is a tragedy about two star-crossed lovers from different families (Montagues and Capulets) who fall hopelessly in love in spite of their families’ years-long feud. Desperate to be together, the two concoct an elaborate escape plan, but Romeo, mistakenly thinking Juliet dead, kills himself. This prompts Juliet to do the same as she awakens to find Romeo dead. The Friar arrives too late to save the lovers and tells the parents the entire story. The families promise to end their hostilities, which have caused the deaths of their only children.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
This is comedy with many twists and turns. Theseus and Hippolyta are to wed. Philostrate has been ordered to prepared for the wedding. Several local craftsmen agree to write and produce a play. Egeus brings his daughter, Hermia, to Theseus for judgment since he does not approve of friend, Lysander. The craftsmen repair to the woods to rehearse at the same time that Lysander and Hermia meet there to plan their elopement. Hermia and Lysander confide in Helena, who has previously been jilted by Demetrius and wants to win him back. Helena, in turn, tells Demetrius of the young lovers’ meeting. This is only the beginning of a delightful tale of true love.ar

Gillian Holroyd is one of the few modern people who can actually cast spells and perform feats of supernaturalism. She casts a spell over an unattached publisher, Shepherd Henderson, partly to keep him away from a rival and partly because she is attracted to him. He falls head over heels in love with her at once and wants to marry her. But witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love, and this minute imperfection leads into a number of difficulties. Ultimately, the lady breaks off with her companions in witchery, preferring the normal and human love offered her by the attractive publisher. But before the happy conclusion of the romance, Gillian comes very near to losing him—but doesn’t.

The Fox on the Fairway

By: Ken Ludwig

Directed by: Melissa Mills

Performances: June 15, 16, 22, 23, 24(m), 28, 29, 30

A tribute from Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A TenorMoon Over Buffalo) to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s, The Fox on the Fairway takes audiences on a hilarious romp, which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it’s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics. A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man’s eternal love affair with…golf.

Bingham, president of the Quail Valley Country Club, is in a difficult position. Not by finding out that his newly hired hand, Justin, is in love with Louise, the waitress at the club house, but by the discovery that the golfer he thought would play for his club has switched sides recruited by his counterpart and opponent, the cocky and arrogant Dickie, and the huge bet he had foolishly wagered is now likely to be lost. Fortunately, he discovers that Justin is actually quite a good golfer and finagles his nomination. Justin does not disappoint and has a huge lead, when close to its end the tournament is interrupted by bad weather. When Justin learns that Louise has lost the engagement ring he gave her – she accidentally flushed it down the toilet – he comes unglued. The game resumes the next day, but Justin loses the lead, and, upset, takes an unfortunate swing breaking his arm. Bingham is desperate, and the appearance of his wife complicates the matter, as she catches him much too close to Pamela, his sex-starved vice-president. Can Bingham find a replacement for Justin to win the game, win the wager, and get his life in order?
